Brisbane gig-goers can check out the future of the city’s live music scene this month, thanks to Brisbane City Council’s talent showcase the QUBE Effect 2018.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the event, now in its fourth year, would see live performances held on April 7 and 14 during Brisbane’s Youth Week celebrations.
“The QUBE Effect is an innovative and contemporary music program that provides opportunities for Brisbane’s emerging musicians to show off their talent and gain valuable industry experience,” Cr Quirk said.
“This year, the QUBE Effect will 24 local acts the opportunity to perform live to audiences in Albert Street and meet some of the world’s top industry professionals with delegate passes to BIGSOUND 2018.
“Council is committed to creating new lifestyle and leisure opportunities and this exciting program of live music is one of more than 50,000 festivals, markets and events that support our vision for a vibrant and creative city every year.”
Cr Quirk said fans would also be able to vote for their favourite act, with prizes on offer for the winning performance.
“Voting for the People’s Choice Award will be open online from 15 May to 14 June 2018 on Council’s website, where voters will be able to watch film clips and nominate their favourite performer,” he said.
“The winner will take home a $2000 cash prize, courtesy of Telstra, as well as a paid performance at Jungle Love festival 2018.
“On top of the People’s Choice Award, an expert industry panel will also award additional titles such as Best Original Song, Green Jam Award (QPAC’s Gig on the Green performance prize), and the Lord Mayor’s City Hall Concert Award.
“This unique opportunity will help nurture and provide 24 of Brisbane’s creative talents with exposure to industry experts looking for Australia’s newest music talents.
“Our New World City is rich with creative, vibrant talent and I congratulate the shortlisted acts, and all of The QUBE Effect entrants on their involvement in this year’s program.”
The QUBE Effect performances will take place on Albert Street, between Charlotte and Mary Streets, on April 7 and 14, between 2pm and 9pm.
