Council will waive the cost of free green waste tipping this weekend, to help thousands of Brisbane residents dispose of fallen branches and garden debris following this week’s wet weather deluge.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said this week’s heavy rain could see thousands of residents needing to clean up their yard by the weekend and the free green waste tipping event was Council’s way of offering a helping hand.
“This weekend’s free green waste tipping event provides residents with the perfect opportunity to clean up after this weeks’ heavy rain and get their garden in tip-top shape,” Cr Quirk said.
“Loose tree branches can become dangerous in high winds, while blocked gutters can cause leaking roofs during Brisbane’s wet season.
“With the summer storm season upon us, it is important residents take this opportunity to check their risks and prepare their property for severe weather.
“Thunderstorms and flash flooding can occur without warning during our city’s warmer months and keeping a neat and tidy yard can be the difference between safety and a disaster.
“Whether it’s prunings, leaves, twigs or weeds, Council is helping residents keep their property tidy and to stay prepared ahead of Brisbane’s notorious storm season.”
Cr Quirk said Council would also waive the $30 sign-up fee for new green waste bins ordered for the remainder of October.
“Last year, more than 2400 residents took advantage of our October green waste recycling bin special offer,” he said.
“Over 84,000 green waste recycling bins have been distributed across the city, helping to contribute to nearly 21,700 tonnes of green waste collected last financial year.
“This is all part of Council’s commitment to keep Brisbane clean, green and sustainable by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.”
