Brisbane comes alive to celebrate historic Horn victory

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has announced Brisbane will honour Jeff Horn’s historic win over Manny Pacquiao, with a special public celebration.

Cr Quirk encouraged residents and fans to make their way to the Brisbane CBD this Thursday 6 July, where Brisbane’s latest sporting champion will be recognised with a tickertape parade through the Queen Street Mall, followed by a presentation of Keys to the City.

“Jeff Horn has written himself into Brisbane’s sporting history, with a sensational triumph over Manny Pacquiao and winning the Battle of Brisbane,” Cr Quirk said.

“Our city’s sporting teams and competitors have some of the most loyal fans in Australian sport – which perfectly captures the essence of Team Brisbane and our friendly and optimistic character.

“Not only has Jeff Horn reached an incredible feat as a world champion, our city has also successfully staged the biggest boxing match in Australian history.

“Our New World City was showcased as a destination of choice to a global audience of hundreds of millions, and it’s fantastic to celebrate a defining point in our city’s sporting and events history.”

Victoria Bridge will also shine bright orange this evening, to recognise the sensational victory and our newest home-grown world champion.

Cr Quirk said the tickertape parade would commence at 12 noon on Thursday, and travel from the bottom to the top of Queen Street Mall into Reddacliff Place, where Horn will hold a signing session for fans after a public presentation.

“Jeff is now a world champion and I am proud this humble boxer from Brisbane has made history and had such a great victory,” he said.

“I encourage the people of Brisbane to come along and join the festivities to recognise a true Brisbane sporting legend.”
