The city is set to sizzle this Friday, with the annual Big City Barbecue returning to King George Square from 12 to 2pm to raise money for the city’s charities.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the event had been bringing the city together for a collective festival of goodwill since 2006 and had raised more than $700,000 for local charities.
“The Big City Barbecue is Brisbane’s day of giving and is all about bringing the community together to help make the world a better place,” Cr Quirk said.
“Brisbane is a city that cares and this community-minded spirit is what we have come to know as the ‘Team Brisbane’ spirit.
“As Lord Mayor, I am honoured to carry on the goodwill of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust and funds raised from this year’s barbecue will allow the trust to help some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
“The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust was established in the 1960s, with every dollar donated going towards some of the city’s lesser-known charities.
“Donations will also benefit Drug ARM Australasia and Foodbank Queensland and will allow these charities to continue to support those suffering the trauma of alcohol and drug abuse, and for the redistribution of surplus food for those in need.”
Cr Quirk said that, in addition to raising money for local charities, the Big City Barbecue would serve up a fiery feast and entertainment from some of Brisbane’s most talented residents.
“This year’s program will be packed with entertainment, including appearances from sporting personalities, a performance from The Voice’s Ellen Reed as well as activations from Hit105, Brisbane Heat and the NRL,” he said.
“The Brisbane City Barbecue is one of thousands of events Council supports every year and I encourage everyone to support a good cause by purchasing some of the delicious treats or buying a raffle ticket on the day.”
The 2018 Big City Barbecue is supported by Riparian Plaza, ISPT, Brisbane City Council, Telstra, Four Points Sheraton Brisbane, The Westin Brisbane, Sharman Property Services, EH Lamar & Co Chartered Accountants, Springmount Services Pty Ltd, Brisbane Marketing, Festival Hire and Grace Education.
